Lucas Foglia's Living on Lava chronicles the allure of Hawaii’s Big Island, where volcanic forces shape both the landscape and the lives of its inhabitants. Five volcanoes form the Big Island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano in the world. Kīlauea has been erupting continuously since 1983. People build homes on the lava after it cools, despite the possibility of molten rock flowing over the same land again. Between eruptions, the cleanest air on Earth blows in with the Pacific Ocean waves.
Lucas Foglia is a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow who creates stories about people in nature. His photographs are collected, exhibited, and published internationally. Living on Lava is his fourth book with Nazraeli Press.
