"My photographic work begins with slowness — with looking, waiting, and allowing the image to form gradually. I’m drawn to the quiet edge of things: the way light hovers on a branch, how a shadow moves across a face, or how a single gesture can hold a sense of myth or memory. These moments are often subtle, almost invisible at first, but they stay with me until I find a way to bring them into form.

Process is not separate from meaning in my practice — it is how I come to understand what I’m seeing. I work with both analog and digital tools, often blending darkroom techniques with layered imagery. I’m interested in how light behaves through different materials, how an image can soften or distort through time, and how a photograph can hold something both tender and unresolved.

Figures, natural elements, and symbolic objects recur across my work — not to tell stories, but to create a sense of presence. I think of these images less as documents and more as emotional landscapes. They offer places to pause, to feel, to remember.

In making them, I try to stay open — to let the process guide me as much as I guide it. That openness is what I hope the viewer can feel: a moment suspended, attentive, and quietly alive."  - Sara Silks

"All photographs were made in the region around Carrara, Italy, where one finds the age-old marble industry – in fact this industry dates back to 70 BCE.

By visiting the area for over a period of more than twenty years, I have been able to investigate the quarries from different angles, all organically related with each other. When I started, I was struck by the fantastic light in the quarries; then I became fascinated by the material itself and the traces the work process left behind. As a result I started to see the quarry as one, big sculpture, in which coincidence played a major role - the work process in the quarry itself led to interesting shapes and structures that were condensed into abstract sculptures through the lens. Finally, also influenced by the work of The New Topographics, I saw and recorded the immense damage done to nature in this impressive western part of the central Apennines. Aloof beauty seemed to have to go hand in hand with cruel attacks on the landscape. Thus, a new, other landscape has come into being that may be read as a metaphor for human interaction with nature."

Mountain ridges forming a jagged path towards the horizon. A small mountain lake reminiscent of a womb. Rampantly proliferating barren tree roots. In the photographic project Between the Mountain and the River by Rick van der Klooster, nature is simultaneously overwhelmingly beautiful, eerie, mysterious, and bursting with symbolism.

When he was still a boy, Van der Klooster’s mother, who died at a young age, often took him to her favourite destination: the Alps in western Austria. For the project Between the Mountain and the River, Van der Klooster revisited this area, with the camera serving as his intermediary. During his travels, which took place between 2018 and 2023, he experienced how nature not only mirrored his personal sadness and loss, but also offered comfort and hope. For the first time in years, the artist was able to hear his mother again, in rustling pines and whispering mountain streams. ‘The landscape returned to me what I had lost,’ he explains.

In his work, Van der Klooster is often searching for metaphoric qualities in nature. The series Between the Mountain and the River aims to highlight the spiritual importance of nature to human beings. In his photographs, the mountain landscape is much more than just a place of leisure; it is a portal to a different world, where no-one really dies as long as the landscape remains alive.

“From 2021 to 2023, I photographed around two reservoirs in the Central Valley of California experiencing a twenty-three year megadrought. The Reservoir weaves together images of the drying lakes and people seeking a leisurely day at the beach. They bring their dogs, babies and baby carriages, inner tubes, kayaks, rafts, umbrellas, coolers, and tents. As the summer progresses and the waterline recedes, families walk over a mile to reach the beach. At times, the sky is colored with smoke from nearby forest fires. “All things in life that once existed tend to re-create”.

“Borderland” represents an intimate research in a familiar place where I grew up since my tender years. Here I would find refuge in my grandparents’ house and feel a strong love coming from them, nature and all the living creatures in the land those silent hills where I felt free to express myself. To me everything is bordered in this rural village on Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, and it is this dimension of indefiniteness that pushes me to a relentless pursuit for the traces of a time that I have not lived enough or that I have lived too much.

My past blends with my present and suggests my future steps. I do not know whether I should listen to it or let myself be carried away by the fresh wind the same one that accompanied me and my grandfather and our conversations about existentialism during hot summer nights, while marvelling at the beauty of the constellation, lying downhill on a wet meadow.

Everything that surrounds me wants to get close to me, just like then, rethinking the legacy of a relationship created in time: with this aim, begins a process of interpreting reality without a celebratory, symbolist nor documentary intent. Rather, it turns out to be an evolution aimed at a deep redemption of my past and present being, producing at the same time an emotional tension that, just as on an extremity, hovers between joy and pain. In such research, which aims to establish a reality and dream, I try to retrace over time fragments of an existence regarding family, growth and belonging.

Each year, Painted Lady butterflies travel between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe in search of blooming flowers. They have followed this route for millions of years.

‘In 2012, I found a piece of material in a rock pool that changed my life. Mistaking this moving piece of cloth for seaweed, started the recovery of synthetic clothing from around the coastline of Britain for the next ten years.’
 
Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections is a typology of discarded clothing fragments found around the coast of the UK. A homage to the work of pioneering botanist and photographer Anna Atkins (1799-1871)—the unique cyanotype images in the book mimic different species of marine algae found in waters around Great Britain. Through the creation of this work, photographic artist Mandy Barker hopes to raise awareness of fast fashion, synthetic clothes, and the harmful effect of microfibres in the oceans.

Over the course of a decade Barker recovered over 200 ‘specimens’ of clothing from 121 beaches from locations as far north as John O’Groats in Scotland, to Land’s End in the South of England. Items ranging from jackets to dressing-up outfits, wigs and trainers, football shirts to underwear, were salvaged from beaches, rockpools and directly from the sea. The items were representative of millions of tonnes of clothes manufactured and discarded each year—sometimes without being worn at all. Every year, the fashion industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and container ships combined.

For each alternative ‘specimen’ in the book Barker created a photogram of the clothing fragments using the cyanotype process to produce detailed Prussian blueprints. The project is inspired by the work of Victorian botanist and photographer, Anna Atkins who used cyanotypes in her groundbreaking book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843) to produce detailed depictions of botanical specimens. By combining art and science, Atkin’s work illustrated the potential of photography and changed how people looked at science in the 1800s.

‘Seeing the potential to re-create new work in a similar way, I realised I could engage how people view science today, and in connection with the present-day consequences of climate change.’

To coincide with the 180th anniversary of Atkin’s book, Barker painstakingly created a replica of the original publication with 202 illustrations, each with the botanical specimen substituted with found garments or fibres. The publication Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections is a carefully edited version of this replica project and begins with outer garments of clothing, such as a waterproof and parka coat, ending with inner garments of underwear worn closest to the skin.

The Line of Water explores memory as a shifting, fluid entity, where trauma is not just a wound but a catalyst for transformation. Sara Palmieri, a visual artist working primarily with photography, investigates the material and symbolic potential of images. Her practice extends into sculpture and performance, using experimental processes to explore how territory and personal narratives shape collective memory, questioning the ways in which images construct and deconstruct reality.

Inspired by the Polesine flood of 1951—the most devastating in Italian history—the project considers the territory as an archive of memory, where water, earth, and inherited stories act as living agents of transmission. The image itself becomes a perceptive surface where opposites merge: visible and invisible, past and present, submerged and emerged. The book-object, curated by Fiorenza Pinna, expands this exploration into a spatial, visual, and tactile experience. The material shifts, transparencies, and overlays disrupt the reading flow, mirroring the instability of history and perception. In this interplay between image and matter, the book itself becomes a territory of creation, where memory takes on new forms and new languages emerge from the fractures of the past.

Devastation in the Amazon rainforest and the climate change it triggers tend to unfold in ways that are too vast to comprehend, too minute to perceive, and too normalised to see. In an attempt to render the scale and urgency of the Amazon’s extensive, impending collapse, Richard Mosse’s most ambitious work to date employs a dazzling array of photographic techniques.

Broken Spectre is an immersive, 74-minute film that shifts between a manifold of ecological narratives, from the topographic to the anthropocentric, and to a careful examination of nonhuman violence and survival. Mosse and his team spent years documenting different fronts of destruction, degradation and environmental crimes in the Amazon Basin and related eco-systems.

Broken Spectre operates on multiple scales: inky, fluorescent microscopic imagery describes the interdependent complexity of the Amazonian biome in scientific detail, while cinematic monochrome infrared scenes track illegal mining, logging and burning, industrial agriculture and indigenous activism. 

Meanwhile, airborne multispectral footage starkly renders vast swathes of empty land in contrast to the lush rainforest, showing the vast scale and systematic organisation of the Amazon’s destruction.

In accompanying photographic works, Mosse renders the invisible visible: through multispectral cameras that emulate satellite imaging technology, alongside ultraviolet botanical studies, and heat-sensitive analogue film warped, mottled and degraded by the oppressive environment and by the burning forest itself. Accompanying these experimental documentary works are Mosse's hypnotically vivid aerial maps, which zoom out and colourise the scale and extent of natural decimation in piercing detail, employing specially-made Geographic Information System (GIS) imaging technology.

As climate change continues to define our era and the future of the planet, Mosse bears witness to a rapidly unfolding catastrophe: recent scientific studies predict that the Amazon is close to reaching a tipping point, at which stage it will no longer be able to generate rain, triggering mass forest dieback and carbon release at devastating levels, impacting climate change, biodiversity, and local and international communities. Mosse shows both human sides of the tragedy: from the Yanomami and Munduruku Indigenous communities fighting for survival; to illegal gold miners poisoning and destroying entire river systems for tiny handfuls of gold; alongside Brazilian cowboys wilfully burning their pristine surroundings to create pasture for cattle to sell on international meat and leather markets.

Created from 2018 to 2022, Broken Spectre was published ahead of the significant general elections in Brazil in which Jair Bolsanaro was stripped of the presidency. Bolsonaro and his executive decimated Brazil's environmental protection agencies and opened the floodgates of deforestation, exponentially accelerating the Amazon's destruction. Should Bolsanaro have been victorious in his 2022 campaign, the fate of the Amazon may have been sealed forever.

Following the release of Hokkaido in 2023, this is Michael Kenna’s second mini-portfolio by Benrido, This portfolio is based on the pilgrimage of Shikoku region to visit the 88 sacred places associated with Kobo-Daishi (Kukai). It is said that if you walk the entire journey, it will take more than 40 days and cover a total distance of about 1,400 kilometers. Kenna has traveled to many sacred places in Shikoku multiple times since 2003, photographing pilgrimages, temples, rock gardens, offerings, lanterns, stone carvings of Buddha and more, with his own poetic perspective. This portfolio includes eight works, and is a series that gives off a different atmosphere from Hokkaido.

A pillar knocked into the ground next to a stream in a flat, open landscape, trees and houses visible in the distance, beneath a vast sky. That is the backdrop to all of Stephen Gill´s photographs in this book. We see the same landscape in spring and summer, in autumn and winter, we see it in sunshine and rain, in snow and wind. Yet there is not the slightest monotony about these pictures, for in almost every one there is a bird, and each of these birds opens up a unique moment in time. We see something that has never happened before and will never happen again. That it takes place in the midst of a landscape characterised by repetition, in which time is cyclical, sets up a keen existential dynamic: on the one hand, everything has happened before, there’s nothing new under the sun; on the other, every moment is unique and carries the hallmark of the miracle: what happens happens only once and never again.

But this wasn’t what I thought about the first time I looked at these photographs. In fact, I barely thought at all, for I was shaken, as a person so often is when confronted with an extraordinary work of art. I’d never seen birds in this way before, as if on their own terms, as independent creatures with independent lives. Ancient, forever improvising, endlessly embroiled with the forces of nature, and yet indulging too. And so infinitely alien to us.

The quiet images of a waning American landscape featured in Jason Lee’s new book TX | CA 19 were made in June and July 2019 on a drive to California from his adopted home state of Texas. This would be the last of such photo outings before he would relocate back to his native Southern California that September.

“Many of these color photographs were made along and surrounding Highways 287 and 40/66, from Decatur, TX to California—a stretch that I’ve travelled one direction or another many times now and have become extremely fond of, making it a point to revisit certain locations and produce current photographs (collecting time-span exposures of familiar sights is for both curiosity and pleasure and remains ongoing). And so you will find quite a few scenes repeated in this companion to TX I CA 17. 

"Here, however, when in California this time, despite having photographed in the desert east of Los Angeles between Highways 40 and 10 where I’d previously made a handful of the pictures seen in the California section of 17, I didn’t expose any color film. Instead, the California images in this offering were made northbound along Highways 14/395 and 6 after departing L.A. for the drive home. A route that I don’t take often enough and did not take two years prior. Beautiful country out that way. And coincidentally it was thereabouts that I made some of my first pictures from the road when I started photographing the American landscape in 2006.“

Born in Aomori in 1924, Ichiro Kojima depicted the lives of people living in the harsh environment of Japan’s Tohoku region. Under the vast sky, he faced the landscapes spread before him with his camera in hand.
 
His career as a photographer lasted only about ten years. Kojima, who passed away suddenly at the age of 39, left behind a dramatic world that still resonates with us today. Despite his attempts to distance himself from the images of Tsugaru, Kojima could never escape the persistent imagery of the Tohoku region that followed him everywhere.
 
This book offers a new perspective on Kojima’s journey, appealing both to those already familiar with his work and those discovering it for the first time.

Interspersed with elliptical texts about a mysterious boy named Dove, who speaks of underground pagans, scrap salvaging, and the search for gold, Dogbreath presents an enigmatic, psychologically engaging portrait of youth on the edge.

The Long Shadow: Unwrapped ~ Marion Post Wolcott’s Labor and Love reveals the unpublished life and images of the American photographer Marion Post Wolcott¹ (b. 1910, d. 1990). Wolcott was the first woman hired as a full-time photographer for the Farm Security Administration in 1938 during America’s Great Depression. Three years later, having made more than 9,000 pictures, Wolcott received ultimatums from her husband, Lee Wolcott, and boss, Roy Stryker: choose love or photography. Wolcott quit her job and spent eleven years managing three dairy farms in rural Virginia. She became a farmer and a farmer’s wife. She raised four children, did housework, milked cows, learned to use machinery, and repaired farmhouses. One assumed that Wolcott gave up photographing. That assumption was wrong.

The Long Shadow is a homage-style reflection on a female icon of photography. Drawing from Wolcott’s archive of unseen intimate portraits and through conversations with her family, Anglo-Australian photographer Odette England (b. 1975) juxtaposes them with her photographs and prose rewritten from interviews and historical records. She responds to similarities between her and Wolcott’s ways of seeing. England’s daughter Hepburn (b. 2010) shares the story as a photographer and muse. This unique collaboration celebrates the unknown sides of a woman whose professional career ended in 1942 and who sought solace in making photographs in the shadows.

The book contains a preface and prose written by Odette England as well as 19 unpublished photographs by Marion Post Wolcott.

Yasuhiro Ogawa’s new photobook Into the Silence captures the rugged yet timeless beauty of Japan’s northern region as he follows in the footsteps of the 17th Century poet Matsuo Bashō.

The story of Matsuo Bashō's journey through the northern provinces of Japan in the 17th century, is recounted in his travelogue "The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” ("Oku no Hosomichi”). In the summer of 1689, Bashō set out on his journey with his traveling companion Sora. They traveled on foot, carrying only minimal provisions and staying in humble lodgings along the way. Bashō was seeking inspiration for his poetry, and he found it in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the places he visited.

Like Bashō before him, Ogawa set out on a journey through the Tōhoku region, unlike Bashō, who traveled on foot with pen in hand, Ogawa preferred to move by train with camera in hand.  His photographs capture the rugged beauty of the landscape, from snow-covered mountains to misty forests and along deserted roads with glimpses of wild oceans, often shot through foggy windows on a train in motion. Through his lens, Ogawa reveals a world that is both remote and timeless, a world in stillness and motion.

Despite the passage of centuries, the challenges faced by Bashō on his journey are still evident in Ogawa’s photographs. The loneliness and isolation of the road are palpable in the shots of empty trains, lone tracks or roads and desolate hotel interiors. So are the physical challenges of traversing rough terrain and inclement weather documented in his muted photographs.  There is a marked contrast between the beauty and tranquility of the landscape and the harsh realities of life in this remote region. From plain coastal towns to empty streets, Ogawa’s images reveal the toll that economic decline and depopulation have taken on the area. Yet there remains a sense of hope and resilience.

At the age of 33, one of Australia’s foremost artists, Bill Henson, produced some of the most evocative portraits and powerful dreamscapes of his career. 

Shot at dawn or dusk, in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, and in the deserts of Egypt, 1985 with its glimpses of faces, figures and places marks the moment when Bill Henson’s long-held desire to find a form for ‘the dream of suburbia’ was realised. Describing this process, Henson says, “I began to realise that these places could be understood as a dreamscape because they affect us so powerfully and with such immediacy as a memento mori. The light, smell, even temperature, as well as the look of these places, animates our memory and gently sharpens our sense of the passage to time.”

Combining photographs of ancient Egypt, with Suburban Melbourne, Henson creates an imaginary world, that shows “the suburban landscape as an interior world that each of us carries around inside us, like childhood, for the rest of our lives.” The photographs in this series are imbued with a sense of unreality. In the mid-1970s, Robert Adams began recording nocturnal scenes near his former home in Longmont, Colorado. Illuminated by moonlight and streetlamp, suburban houses, roads, sidewalks and fields seemed transfigured. 25 years after first publishing a sequence of these pictures in 1985 as Summer Nights, he revisited his project, amending its title and completely re-editing its contents to create a more disquieting and thus more accurate reflection of his experience.
