Apart from the larger main islands of the archipelago, there are about 300 inhabited islands in Japan. Most of them are tiny islands with small population of few hundreds, and almost of all the inhabitants are elderly people. Those remote islands used to be vibrant with many inhabitants who were engaged in fishery and trading, but the islands’ population started to decline sharply just after the period of rapid economic growth in the 1960’s and 70’s, due to the younger people who left the islands for seeking better jobs.

Yasuhiro Ogawa’s first visit to a remote island was to Miyake-jima in 2005 as he elaborates, “Following the volcanic eruption in 2000, the entire population had been forced to evacuate. Five years later, I visited the island aboard the ship carrying the returning residents. It was my first experience of visiting a remote island. The island had been uninhabited for five years, and it felt as though time had stood still. The atmosphere and the passage of time there seemed entirely different from those on the mainland. I was immediately captivated by the island’s unique charm and decided to visit as many islands as I could.”

Jenia Fridlyand grew up in the Soviet Union in the years just prior to perestroika. Visiting Cuba in the second decade of the twenty-first century, then, felt like an uncanny homecoming. While both tangible and familiar, the grim fabric of the communist quotidian kept unravelling for Fridlyand under the bright, tropical sun. With a large-format camera and a photographic practice rooted in the American tradition, Fridlyand traveled throughout the island during several extended trips. She intuitively trained her lens on moments and scenes with the potential of holding both the known and the novel—from a pair of donkeys silhouetted against hilltops, a customer at a barber shop and a pair of rocking chairs seen through an open door, to drops of sweat on a man’s curved back and sweet fruit hanging ripe on a tree.

In An Abridged Dictionary of Sculpture John Gossage considers the changes objects (sculptures) undergo when they are photographed. His images transform these objects rather than transcribe them, altering their condition of being. For Gossage, to photograph is to ask one thing to become another kind of thing. Indeed, does a sculpture always need a pedestal or isolation to not just be another thing in the world? Whether a pile of archive folders, a dirty beaker, a heap of baseball caps, a plank of wood or a tuft of grass, he photographs these objects against the same background of white paper, their shadows often taking on as much presence as their concrete forms. With so much of the objects unclear (their volume, scale and weight, their three-dimensionality), and each having lost its original purpose or being about to die, how much has Gossage actually saved in his photographs: only his intentions? Is a good photograph always better than what it pictures—and how? This book is a dictionary because it describes the sculptures rather than being the sculptures: as every photograph does with everything.

This landmark volume represents the first time McCullin’s legendary Vietnam War photographs have been reproduced in a book dedicated only to this conflict.

McCullin, who turns 91 in Autumn 2026, presents—in what the photographer has indicated will be his ‘last ever book’—a retrospective in book form of his time in Vietnam; captured over three sections or ‘campaigns’ of the individual trips he made to the region throughout the war. The work is the result of a deep archival excavation, featuring approximately 100 black and white images and more than 20 colour photographs, nearly half of which have never been previously published in print or exhibited. At first glance, it’s a spectacle of vibrant colors and dazzlingly bright lights on extravagantly decorated trucks. Dekotora, short for “deko torakku” (i.e. decorated truck) is written off by mainstream Japanese society due to its association with “bad boys”. But beneath the flashy surface lies a world shrouded in mystery and poetry.

Dekotora first caught on in the late 1960s as a form of mobile advertising: a truck carrying fish from Hokkaido, for example, would sport a traditional painting showing its cargo and where it was from. Today, due to regulations prohibiting this form of decoration because of the disrepute of the Dekotora scene, these trucks are used only by a few small businesses, such as fish and flower delivery services.

Although to all appearances a relatively exclusive community, its members frequently host public events where they proudly show off their creations on wheels. Often, these gatherings are fundraisers for charitable causes, such as aiding victims of the 2011 earthquake, many of whom are still suffering from its consequences.

In a conversation with Japanese pop culture expert Kyoichi Tsuzuki, I gained a deeper understanding of Dekotora’s cultural significance. Beyond its flashy exterior, Dekotora reflects a traditional Japanese aesthetic: like Japan’s ornate hearses, tombs, temples and the sacred mikoshi palanquins used in Shinto festivals, it mirrors a penchant for elaborate decoration that is deeply ingrained in Japan’s suburban and rural communities. It’s a cultural echo of the past, of childhood memories that are rekindled by the sight of these garish juggernauts on the nation’s highways and in iconic movies.

Placed for two months alongside thirteen women in a pre-trail detention unit, bodies become clashing, hysterical animals held captive.

Tracing the physical and emotional thresholds of pregnancy complications and premature birth, ‘JJ VFF VV’ is a tender documentation of the birth of João Linneu and Fernanda Fajardo’s first child, Valentín, born in 2014.

Linneu’s photographs are intimate and raw, instinctive and exposing, documenting his partner as her body navigates a challenging pregnancy, moving between the private space of their bedroom and bathroom, onto hospital wards, soon to be shared with her newborn son. Interweaved are photographs taken by Fajardo: self-portraits made when hospitalised and occasional portraits she has captured of Linneu. The cover of the book is an illustration by their son Valentín, who is now eleven, and aware of this photographic record of his coming into life. In ‘JJ VFF VV’ Linneu and his family shape an unprecedented collective portrait of lived experience, revealing a sensitive visual language for circumstances so often shrouded in silence.

This diaristic record of pregnancy complications is set against Linneu’s static and unforgiving landscape photographs of the city of São Paulo, where he and his partner found themselves having to live and put their life on pause in the months prior to the birth of their child. Austere monoliths and brutal blind façades linger, towering over their intimate lives to become physical extensions of the stillness and inertia imposed upon them. Stillness suffuses Linneu’s imagery. Intertwined with his honest documentation of a painful pregnancy – obscured scans, a shape-shifting body, toilet basins stained with blood – are portraits of his partner lying in bed. Shot on a single day and appearing chronologically throughout the book, the bed – at times absent when Fajardo is hospitalised – holds the passage of time, and the weight of pain and uncertainty shared.

Resisting the constraints of a paediatric intensive care unit where photography was prohibited, ‘JJ VFF VV’ becomes a marker of representation, offering a visual counterpoint to idealised narratives of childbirth. Discovering beauty in the pain they have shared, Linneu and his family create a refreshingly unique portrayal of the emergence of a family unit, and demonstrate the layers of vulnerability that encompass bringing new life into the world.

Marens van Leunen’s debut book ‘Responds Quickly, Friendly’ explores the significance of our everyday objects and domestic environments, through playfully observed and staged images made in the space of her father’s home.

‘Responds Quickly, Friendly’ began in late 2022, when van Leunen’s father’s apartment in Amsterdam, which he had rented for thirty years, was sold to a new owner. Facing transition and change within their lived environment and a resulting urgency to inventory her father’s belongings, van Leunen began capturing and preserving these objects alongside the interiors of her childhood home. What emerges are carefully constructed and staged installations of his personal artifacts: from piles of chairs and paperback books; stacks of coffee mugs and Moka Pots; and tangles of hoovers and wired headphones.

“By observing, rearranging, isolating and staging my father’s objects within his house, the photographs show how belongings reflect the presence, habits and identity of their owner. Throughout the work, my father appears fragmentally through gestures or traces.” - Marens van Leunen

Playfully documenting her father’s everyday items that are soon to be packed into removal boxes, or listed and uploaded, bought and sold online, van Leunen imbues the quotidian with a renewed sense of significance. It offers a careful consideration of the ways in which our personal items become carriers of identity and markers of personal memory.

‘Responds Quickly, Friendly’ is a unique commentary on the economies of domesticity and material culture. van Leunen’s photographs sit beside a digital archive of functional photographs of her father’s objects – no longer carefully staged by the artist, but listed for online sale on Marktplaats.nl. Interspersed are his handwritten lists documenting his uploads and transactions. Together, the works speak to a universal experience of how we move through the world, whereby languages of listing, ranking, bidding and photographing become central to the shaping of our domestic and intimate life.

Coirón is a long-form documentary project, photographed over six years in the Chilean region of Magallanes, following aging gauchos known as puesteros, who live and work alone for months at a time across vast private ranches. Their lives, often silent, are shaped by distance, physical labour, and long periods of solitude, on land they do not own and with little security once their body begins to fail. This new body of photographic work follows their daily labour and stillness, offering a collective reflection on rural life in contemporary Chile, where meaning emerges through repetition, gesture, and the slow accumulation of time.

The wider region is undergoing rapid social, cultural, and economic change, and fewer young people feel the desire to pursue a life on the land, breaking a generational cycle of farm life. Caught in the middle, many puesteros move between embracing change and resisting it. Their interweaving stories form an intimate, complex portrait of a way of life on the brink of disappearing, and invites the viewer to pause within a world moving too quickly to keep up.

Pie Aerts commented 'As long as I can remember, I’ve always feared being alone. Partly in a physical sense, but mostly in a deeper existential sense. Spending time in the presence of these puesteros, while seeing them sit through a life of silence, hardship and endurance, I started to open up to a different perspective on the silence I’ve always feared. The Holdouts, the debut photobook by American photographer Ben Marcin, offers a unique view of the city of Baltimore and its surrounding areas through three very different sets of homes.

We are taken to marginalized homes and houses, some as old as 250 years, others just months old, found in and around Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Marcin shows us solo row houses in the inner city that somehow survived the wrecking ball; abandoned houses on the Eastern Shore where the last generations of families either passed away or moved on after decades of farming the land; and temporary homeless camps in the city, none of which have ever survived for more than a year.

The title for the book comes from the term ‘holdout,’ a common real estate term that describes a property owner who refuses to sell a building or lot to a developer, thus greatly hindering the completion of a larger, community-based project. Sometimes eminent domain is invoked to force an owner to vacate a property for the common good but, in other cases, the larger project is simply built around the house. Many of Marcin’s houses have become abandoned over the course of time but others are still surprisingly occupied. Taken together, they demonstrate an astute understanding of the vernacular of Baltimore and the Eastern Shore.

He says, 'Strictly speaking, none of my houses or campsites would be considered real estate holdouts. No shopping centre, highway overpass or gambling casino ever took their place. However, they do personify a more straightforward definition of what a holdout is, namely, the act of resisting something or refusing to accept what is offered.'

'I have been photographing the places where people live for almost forty years. At first, I did this primarily on my trips around the world but, over time, I withdrew closer and closer to home until I found myself working on sites just a short distance from my own house (in Baltimore). In short, I began to understand where I live.'

A striking interpretation of Killip’s work in the Northeast of England and Ireland between 1975 and 1986, featuring many previously unpublished photographs.

From Huddersfield to fishing communities on the North Yorkshire coast and the fury of the miners’ strike, Chris Killip’s lens captured the divisions and communities that define England.
