Air, flowers and colours is Mika Horie's  second artist book co-published by IBASHO & the(M) éditions.

For this book Horie immersed herself in nearly-forgotten traditions such as kimono-making, the tea ceremony, and even duck hunting. Particularly fascinated by the intricate beauty of the Obi and the entire kimono-making process, she met with artisans who specialise in crafting silk yarns and Obi. Over two months, she raised silkworms to gain a deeper understanding of the silk production process. During this time, she also experienced the enchanting world of native wildflowers and plants during her weekly tea ceremony practice. Her tea instructors shared profound Zen wisdom while discussing the seasonal decorations in the tea room, revealing the deep significance and beauty of each arrangement. These teachings enriched her creativity, inspiring fresh ideas and imagery she eagerly anticipated exploring.

Throughout this journey, she delved deeply into the rich and complex facets of Japanese culture, uncovering uncharted aspects of the island's history. She hopes that her newest book, “Air, Flowers, and Colours”, provides readers with an insightful glimpse into her profound connection to her identity and ancestral heritage. 

Each copy of the book is different, for it has  its own cyanotype print of a poetic scenery on handmade paper, which makes each book a unique experience. For the interior, the perception of the original is perceived by the artistic photography that almost makes it look like the original, and enhanced by the choices for ink and paper. The rough edges of the book emphasise the character of the handmade paper and its softness.

In 2015, a lone male wolf traveled from high in the Italian Alps to make its permanent home in south central France. Following the release of Hokkaido in 2023, this is Michael Kenna’s second mini-portfolio by Benrido, This portfolio is based on the pilgrimage of Shikoku region to visit the 88 sacred places associated with Kobo-Daishi (Kukai). It is said that if you walk the entire journey, it will take more than 40 days and cover a total distance of about 1,400 kilometers. Kenna has traveled to many sacred places in Shikoku multiple times since 2003, photographing pilgrimages, temples, rock gardens, offerings, lanterns, stone carvings of Buddha and more, with his own poetic perspective. This portfolio includes eight works, and is a series that gives off a different atmosphere from Hokkaido.

In the distance, there's the ocean. But here, it's the land of high, rounded mountains, of rivers, of pastures. Of those who cross, share and tend it. This land is the Basque hinterland. Straddling France and Spain, nestled between the Pyrenees and the Bay of Biscay, it's a proud land of wild beauty, often fantasized about and surrounded by a mystical mist, as if to better protect it from foreign eyes. 

Anne Rearick nevertheless crossed this misty barrier by setting foot for the first time, in 1990, in the small village of Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port). Since then, and for more than 30 years, Rearick has returned again and again, establishing a deep bond with the inhabitants over generations. And therein lies the strength of Rearick's work: a deep, sincere feeling for the people she photographs. It's not naive romanticism, but an open, tender and generous gaze, characteristic of her long-term work and her humanist vision of photography. Her honest understanding of the photographer's work is evident in her square compositions, where concentration of vision and subtle black and white tones harmonize to convey not only the beauty of the Basque country, but also the reality of its raw land and of its rural world we see evolving over the decades.

Gure Bazterrak, which if it were easy to translate the nuances of Basque language, could be transcribed as « our land », is the representation of the visceral attachment of the inhabitants to this land, and is Rearick's love song to those she has loved and still loves there.

Over the course of multiple summers, Raymond Meeks has ventured the few miles from his rural home in the Catskill Mountain region of New York, to a single-lane bridge spanning the tributaries of Bowery and Catskill Creeks. Beneath the bridge, a waterfall drops sixty-feet over moss-covered limestone toward a forbidding pond. The local youth have come here from time immemorial, congregating near outcroppings and around a concrete altar – a remnant of an earlier stone bridge. Most allow themselves a brief running start before launching their pale bodies into the void, where tentative suggestions of flight mark the response to gravity. Taken collectively, their gestures allude to ritual, a prayerful response to the exigencies of budding sexuality and a future rife with uncertainty. Halfstory Halflife is a distillation of the photographs made in the shadows of these falls, marked each summer by the emergence of young adults perched at a precipice both in space and in their lives.

The quiet images of a waning American landscape featured in Jason Lee’s new book TX | CA 19 were made in June and July 2019 on a drive to California from his adopted home state of Texas. This would be the last of such photo outings before he would relocate back to his native Southern California that September.

“Many of these color photographs were made along and surrounding Highways 287 and 40/66, from Decatur, TX to California—a stretch that I’ve travelled one direction or another many times now and have become extremely fond of, making it a point to revisit certain locations and produce current photographs (collecting time-span exposures of familiar sights is for both curiosity and pleasure and remains ongoing). And so you will find quite a few scenes repeated in this companion to TX I CA 17. 

"Here, however, when in California this time, despite having photographed in the desert east of Los Angeles between Highways 40 and 10 where I’d previously made a handful of the pictures seen in the California section of 17, I didn’t expose any color film. Instead, the California images in this offering were made northbound along Highways 14/395 and 6 after departing L.A. for the drive home. A route that I don’t take often enough and did not take two years prior. Beautiful country out that way. And coincidentally it was thereabouts that I made some of my first pictures from the road when I started photographing the American landscape in 2006.“

Adam Ferguson began photographing Australia’s interior in 2013 in an attempt to dispel sentimental and outdated narratives around the ‘Outback’—a place central to the identity and development of modern day Australia. His photographic survey, made over a 10-year period, depicts fading traditional events, shrinking small towns, Aboriginal connection to Country, the impacts of globalisation and the adversity of climate change to illustrate the complex realities of contemporary life in the ‘Outback’.

The ‘Outback’ has no demarcated border but refers to Australia’s vast and sparsely populated interior—73 percent of Australia’s territory, more than two million square miles—is inhabited by just 5 percent of its 24 million people. In spite of its relatively small population it is an important and diverse segment which defines the character of the country and has been  mythologised in poetry, song, literature and screen. 

Ferguson was originally inspired by Richard Avedon’s portrait project, ‘In the American West’—which shattered romantic notions of the west. Ferguson’s project is similar in scope and ambition but stylistically divergent. As the project evolved it became evident that portraiture alone could not narrate the stories of the people he met. 

‘Part of the experience of living in this huge, sweeping landscape is the relationship each individual has with the land and environment. It made sense to position everybody in the spaces they  occupy. I wanted to construct a scene which complemented, or reinforced the stories of the people I photographed.’

The Long Shadow: Unwrapped ~ Marion Post Wolcott’s Labor and Love reveals the unpublished life and images of the American photographer Marion Post Wolcott¹ (b. 1910, d. 1990). Wolcott was the first woman hired as a full-time photographer for the Farm Security Administration in 1938 during America’s Great Depression. Three years later, having made more than 9,000 pictures, Wolcott received ultimatums from her husband, Lee Wolcott, and boss, Roy Stryker: choose love or photography. Wolcott quit her job and spent eleven years managing three dairy farms in rural Virginia. She became a farmer and a farmer’s wife. She raised four children, did housework, milked cows, learned to use machinery, and repaired farmhouses. One assumed that Wolcott gave up photographing. That assumption was wrong.

The Long Shadow is a homage-style reflection on a female icon of photography. Drawing from Wolcott’s archive of unseen intimate portraits and through conversations with her family, Anglo-Australian photographer Odette England (b. 1975) juxtaposes them with her photographs and prose rewritten from interviews and historical records. She responds to similarities between her and Wolcott’s ways of seeing. England’s daughter Hepburn (b. 2010) shares the story as a photographer and muse. This unique collaboration celebrates the unknown sides of a woman whose professional career ended in 1942 and who sought solace in making photographs in the shadows.

The book contains a preface and prose written by Odette England as well as 19 unpublished photographs by Marion Post Wolcott.

In the summer of 1689, Bashō set out on his journey with his traveling companion Sora. They traveled on foot, carrying only minimal provisions and staying in humble lodgings along the way. Bashō was seeking inspiration for his poetry, and he found it in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the places he visited.

Like Bashō before him, Ogawa set out on a journey through the Tōhoku region, unlike Bashō, who traveled on foot with pen in hand, Ogawa preferred to move by train with camera in hand.  His photographs capture the rugged beauty of the landscape, from snow-covered mountains to misty forests and along deserted roads with glimpses of wild oceans, often shot through foggy windows on a train in motion. Through his lens, Ogawa reveals a world that is both remote and timeless, a world in stillness and motion.

Despite the passage of centuries, the challenges faced by Bashō on his journey are still evident in Ogawa’s photographs. The pond at Upton Pyne formed at the site of an eighteenth-century manganese mine.

Located on land owned by a local family who were involved in the mining venture, the first excavations began in March 1788. It was originally an open-cast mine employing just a few men who worked with ladders, picks, shovels, horses and carts. The quality of the ore in the load was rich, and once refined it was shipped from Exeter Quay to London and Bristol, where it was used predominantly in the production of glass. After a bright start the output of the mine steadily diminished and by 1823 it had ceased production, leaving a large pit, shallow on the east side near the road and becoming deeper towards the west, where it is overhung by a cliff.

Known locally as ‘The Black Pit’, it gradually filled with water to form a pond. Within living memory the land around the pond had been used to keep the village pigs and to grow vegetables. However, over the years, as so many relics of the Industrial Revolution, it became increasingly derelict, full of discarded household goods, a car, farm and garden waste and fallen trees.

This is a story in three parts. The first two are built around the three-year cycles of the two projects to improve the pond. The third is a short epilogue that places the site in a wider geographic perspective.

The pictures present a collection of histories. Within the broad sweep of time they encompass a thousand years of a large estate on the borders of a city that has since Roman times been a regional capital; the comings and goings of the Industrial Revolution; the decline of agricultural life with the advent of modern farming; and the urbanisation of village life.

Within the span of the six years the pond had risen and fallen, trees had collapsed while others grew, herons and a kingfisher had returned, the roof of the shed adjacent to the pond had fallen in, the collection of farm machinery had grown, and the number of ducks living in and around the pond had significantly increased.

Running as threads through the work are the myths that pervade our imaginations and motivate so many of our actions; and the wonder at what we too might leave behind.
