For this sixteenth title in the Des oiseaux collection, the great Brazilian photographer has plunged into his impressive archives to extract a selection of exceptional images celebrating a world populated exclusively by albatrosses, eagles, parrots, gannets and other rare species. For over thirty years, Sebastião Salgado has been photographing, on land and at sea, in the most remote regions of the world, from the Amazon, Asia and Africa to the icy spaces of Antarctica. More than half of the photographs are previously unpublished, and the book is a veritable ode to the beauty of our planet.

To accompany this visual corpus, a text by Erik Orsenna evokes our close ties with the world of birds, while an interview between Sebastião Salgado and Philippe Séclier, co-director of the Des oiseaux collection, bears witness to the photographer's special relationship with the animal kingdom.

His work shows the essence of the Great American West, the cathedral-like Yosemite National park, and seascapes of California's churning Pacific coastline.

Printed in duotone on special matte-coated art paper, and bound in linen with a tipped-in cover plate, Sky Country opens with an introduction by Ann Jastrab. It is published on the occasion of Kolbrener’s solo exhibition at Center for Photographic Art, Carmel opening in February, 2025.

Each photograph oscillates between the eerie and enchanting, the humorous and the haunting.

Central to Hausthor’s work is a fascination with the instability of fact in storytelling. The viewer is drawn into a space where the line between truth and artistic license is deliberately blurred. Hausthor’s photography integrates elements of ad hoc investigative journalism, disinformation, and performance, disrupting traditional approaches to nature photography. The result is an exploration of a post-fact world, where the boundaries between parable and reality dissolve, leaving the viewer to question what they believe.

The book’s structure is anchored by seven delicate gatefolds, symbolizing the consecutive nights Hausthor was visited by a moth—an intimate marker of times that lends the work a diaristic quality. These pages invite readers into a ritualistic experience, transforming the book into a meditative artifact that reflects the fractured, fluid, and deeply human nature of reality itself.

Devastation in the Amazon rainforest and the climate change it triggers tend to unfold in ways that are too vast to comprehend, too minute to perceive, and too normalised to see. In an attempt to render the scale and urgency of the Amazon’s extensive, impending collapse, Richard Mosse’s most ambitious work to date employs a dazzling array of photographic techniques.

Broken Spectre is an immersive, 74-minute film that shifts between a manifold of ecological narratives, from the topographic to the anthropocentric, and to a careful examination of nonhuman violence and survival. Mosse and his team spent years documenting different fronts of destruction, degradation and environmental crimes in the Amazon Basin and related eco-systems.

Broken Spectre operates on multiple scales: inky, fluorescent microscopic imagery describes the interdependent complexity of the Amazonian biome in scientific detail, while cinematic monochrome infrared scenes track illegal mining, logging and burning, industrial agriculture and indigenous activism. 

Meanwhile, airborne multispectral footage starkly renders vast swathes of empty land in contrast to the lush rainforest, showing the vast scale and systematic organisation of the Amazon’s destruction.

In accompanying photographic works, Mosse renders the invisible visible: through multispectral cameras that emulate satellite imaging technology, alongside ultraviolet botanical studies, and heat-sensitive analogue film warped, mottled and degraded by the oppressive environment and by the burning forest itself. Accompanying these experimental documentary works are Mosse's hypnotically vivid aerial maps, which zoom out and colourise the scale and extent of natural decimation in piercing detail, employing specially-made Geographic Information System (GIS) imaging technology.

As climate change continues to define our era and the future of the planet, Mosse bears witness to a rapidly unfolding catastrophe: recent scientific studies predict that the Amazon is close to reaching a tipping point, at which stage it will no longer be able to generate rain, triggering mass forest dieback and carbon release at devastating levels, impacting climate change, biodiversity, and local and international communities. Mosse shows both human sides of the tragedy: from the Yanomami and Munduruku Indigenous communities fighting for survival; to illegal gold miners poisoning and destroying entire river systems for tiny handfuls of gold; alongside Brazilian cowboys wilfully burning their pristine surroundings to create pasture for cattle to sell on international meat and leather markets.

Created from 2018 to 2022, Broken Spectre was published ahead of the significant general elections in Brazil in which Jair Bolsanaro was stripped of the presidency. Bolsonaro and his executive decimated Brazil's environmental protection agencies and opened the floodgates of deforestation, exponentially accelerating the Amazon's destruction. Should Bolsanaro have been victorious in his 2022 campaign, the fate of the Amazon may have been sealed forever.

Mike Brodie’s first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity touched down more than a decade ago, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. “Brodie leapt into the life of picture-making as if he was the first to do it,” Danny Lyon wrote about the book in Aperture. Next came Tones of Dirt and Bone, a collection of earlier SX-70 pictures Brodie made when photography first led him to hopping freights, when he was known as “The Polaroid Kidd.” And then Brodie seemed to disappear from the art world as suddenly and mysteriously as he’d first appeared. Air, flowers and colours is Mika Horie's  second artist book co-published by IBASHO & the(M) éditions.

For this book Horie immersed herself in nearly-forgotten traditions such as kimono-making, the tea ceremony, and even duck hunting. Particularly fascinated by the intricate beauty of the Obi and the entire kimono-making process, she met with artisans who specialise in crafting silk yarns and Obi. Over two months, she raised silkworms to gain a deeper understanding of the silk production process. During this time, she also experienced the enchanting world of native wildflowers and plants during her weekly tea ceremony practice. Her tea instructors shared profound Zen wisdom while discussing the seasonal decorations in the tea room, revealing the deep significance and beauty of each arrangement. Throughout this journey, she delved deeply into the rich and complex facets of Japanese culture, uncovering uncharted aspects of the island's history. Each copy of the book is different, for it has  its own cyanotype print of a poetic scenery on handmade paper, which makes each book a unique experience. For the interior, the perception of the original is perceived by the artistic photography that almost makes it look like the original, and enhanced by the choices for ink and paper. The rough edges of the book emphasise the character of the handmade paper and its softness.

In 2015, a lone male wolf traveled from high in the Italian Alps to make its permanent home in south central France. Following the release of Hokkaido in 2023, this is Michael Kenna’s second mini-portfolio by Benrido, This portfolio is based on the pilgrimage of Shikoku region to visit the 88 sacred places associated with Kobo-Daishi (Kukai). It is said that if you walk the entire journey, it will take more than 40 days and cover a total distance of about 1,400 kilometers. Kenna has traveled to many sacred places in Shikoku multiple times since 2003, photographing pilgrimages, temples, rock gardens, offerings, lanterns, stone carvings of Buddha and more, with his own poetic perspective. This portfolio includes eight works, and is a series that gives off a different atmosphere from Hokkaido.

In the distance, there's the ocean. But here, it's the land of high, rounded mountains, of rivers, of pastures. Of those who cross, share and tend it. This land is the Basque hinterland. Straddling France and Spain, nestled between the Pyrenees and the Bay of Biscay, it's a proud land of wild beauty, often fantasized about and surrounded by a mystical mist, as if to better protect it from foreign eyes. 

Anne Rearick nevertheless crossed this misty barrier by setting foot for the first time, in 1990, in the small village of Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port). Since then, and for more than 30 years, Rearick has returned again and again, establishing a deep bond with the inhabitants over generations. And therein lies the strength of Rearick's work: a deep, sincere feeling for the people she photographs. It's not naive romanticism, but an open, tender and generous gaze, characteristic of her long-term work and her humanist vision of photography. Her honest understanding of the photographer's work is evident in her square compositions, where concentration of vision and subtle black and white tones harmonize to convey not only the beauty of the Basque country, but also the reality of its raw land and of its rural world we see evolving over the decades.

Gure Bazterrak, which if it were easy to translate the nuances of Basque language, could be transcribed as « our land », is the representation of the visceral attachment of the inhabitants to this land, and is Rearick's love song to those she has loved and still loves there.

Toshio Shibata’s “LANDSCAPE” is a series of compositional images of concrete retaining walls and erosion control dams in the mountains of Japan. These walls and dams, built with Japan’s advanced civil engineering technology, are strikingly beautiful and well proportioned, but at the same time, they are man-made objects that are incompatible with nature, yet in a sense they symbolize Landscape in modern Japan. This portfolio features six collotype prints of Shibata’s representative works taken in Niigata, Fukushima, Miyazaki, and Tochigi between 1989 and 1990. Over the course of multiple summers, Raymond Meeks has ventured the few miles from his rural home in the Catskill Mountain region of New York, to a single-lane bridge spanning the tributaries of Bowery and Catskill Creeks. Beneath the bridge, a waterfall drops sixty-feet over moss-covered limestone toward a forbidding pond. The local youth have come here from time immemorial, congregating near outcroppings and around a concrete altar – a remnant of an earlier stone bridge. Most allow themselves a brief running start before launching their pale bodies into the void, where tentative suggestions of flight mark the response to gravity. Taken collectively, their gestures allude to ritual, a prayerful response to the exigencies of budding sexuality and a future rife with uncertainty. Halfstory Halflife is a distillation of the photographs made in the shadows of these falls, marked each summer by the emergence of young adults perched at a precipice both in space and in their lives.

Watanabe’s second artist book features entirely new images from his latest series ‘Beyond What You See'. Like Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, Watanabe depicts the subjects in his photographs in-between the mystical and the real world, creating a sense of confusion in the viewer. Watanabe’s work has also something similar to the Japanese concept of ‘ma’, a moment of silence or emptiness for awareness and contemplation. His work stimulates the viewer to pause, reflect and engage with the world around us.

The quiet images of a waning American landscape featured in Jason Lee’s new book TX | CA 19 were made in June and July 2019 on a drive to California from his adopted home state of Texas. This would be the last of such photo outings before he would relocate back to his native Southern California that September.

“Many of these color photographs were made along and surrounding Highways 287 and 40/66, from Decatur, TX to California—a stretch that I’ve travelled one direction or another many times now and have become extremely fond of, making it a point to revisit certain locations and produce current photographs (collecting time-span exposures of familiar sights is for both curiosity and pleasure and remains ongoing). And so you will find quite a few scenes repeated in this companion to TX I CA 17. 

"Here, however, when in California this time, despite having photographed in the desert east of Los Angeles between Highways 40 and 10 where I’d previously made a handful of the pictures seen in the California section of 17, I didn’t expose any color film. Instead, the California images in this offering were made northbound along Highways 14/395 and 6 after departing L.A. for the drive home. A route that I don’t take often enough and did not take two years prior. Beautiful country out that way. And coincidentally it was thereabouts that I made some of my first pictures from the road when I started photographing the American landscape in 2006.“

This event marked the beginning of the Swedish witch-hunts, a period of mass hysteria and horror in Älvdalen and its neighbouring regions. Born in Aomori in 1924, Ichiro Kojima depicted the lives of people living in the harsh environment of Japan’s Tohoku region. Under the vast sky, he faced the landscapes spread before him with his camera in hand.
 
His career as a photographer lasted only about ten years. Kojima, who passed away suddenly at the age of 39, left behind a dramatic world that still resonates with us today. Despite his attempts to distance himself from the images of Tsugaru, Kojima could never escape the persistent imagery of the Tohoku region that followed him everywhere.
 
This book offers a new perspective on Kojima’s journey, appealing both to those already familiar with his work and those discovering it for the first time.
