“The images were taken in places where the photographer was either living, visiting his parents or teaching. That connection affords Steinmetz a familiarity and comfort and enables an ease he strives for with the strangers he photographs, which is reflected in the pictures. In black and white, things can rest a little easier in the frame. Summertime is more about the kids and that feeling of having all the time in the world in summer—and in the middle of winter, Summertime is what we yearn for most.” — Time
Nazraeli Press is delighted to announce a remastered and greatly expanded edition of the epic Mark Steinmetz monograph, Summertime. First published in 2011 as a follow up to his South Central trilogy, Summertime is a series of portraits of young children and teenagers caught in the midst of activity in distinctly American settings. Made between 1984 and 1991, when kids were able to roam their neighborhoods with less supervision than today, riding bikes without wearing helmets, and hanging out without constant digital interruptions, these black and white photographs capture the light and feel of an endless summer. Beautifully printed in duotone on natural art paper, this new edition of Summertime includes 30 previously unpublished images, and is limited to 2,000 casebound copies.
