People of the Mud is a powerful new series by Berlin-based US-Dominican artist Luis Alberto Rodriguez, made collaboratively amongst the communities of County Wexford in Ireland, where ancient tradition and modern life rub shoulders daily.

With a background in professional dance, Rodriguez’s work pays tribute to the metaphorical weight of centuries of physical labour behind cultivating the landscape and maintaining cultural heritage. Images of scarred limbs and hands, weathered faces and choreographed bodies appear as a cartography of this labour, reflecting how culture both shapes and is shaped by individuals. Elsewhere, we see the exaggerated glamour of modern female Irish dancers taken out of the glitzy ballrooms and into the fields, creating a rupture across time and space.

While in Wexford, Rodriguez was struck by the intense physicality of the sport of hurling. Considered to be the fastest sport on grass, while watching slow-motion footage of hurling Rodriguez saw that within seconds the players would go through pushing, shoving, grabbing, hugging, knocking each other down and then lifting one another up. Rodriguez worked with players to reform these gestures: creating sculptures out of bodies, directing and literally layering players upon one another.

Air, flowers and colours is Mika Horie's  second artist book co-published by IBASHO & the(M) éditions.

For this book Horie immersed herself in nearly-forgotten traditions such as kimono-making, the tea ceremony, and even duck hunting. Particularly fascinated by the intricate beauty of the Obi and the entire kimono-making process, she met with artisans who specialise in crafting silk yarns and Obi. Over two months, she raised silkworms to gain a deeper understanding of the silk production process. During this time, she also experienced the enchanting world of native wildflowers and plants during her weekly tea ceremony practice. Her tea instructors shared profound Zen wisdom while discussing the seasonal decorations in the tea room, revealing the deep significance and beauty of each arrangement. These teachings enriched her creativity, inspiring fresh ideas and imagery she eagerly anticipated exploring.

Throughout this journey, she delved deeply into the rich and complex facets of Japanese culture, uncovering uncharted aspects of the island's history. She hopes that her newest book, “Air, Flowers, and Colours”, provides readers with an insightful glimpse into her profound connection to her identity and ancestral heritage. 

Each copy of the book is different, for it has  its own cyanotype print of a poetic scenery on handmade paper, which makes each book a unique experience. For the interior, the perception of the original is perceived by the artistic photography that almost makes it look like the original, and enhanced by the choices for ink and paper. The rough edges of the book emphasise the character of the handmade paper and its softness.

Yasuhiro Ogawa’s new photobook Into the Silence captures the rugged yet timeless beauty of Japan’s northern region as he follows in the footsteps of the 17th Century poet Matsuo Bashō.

The story of Matsuo Bashō's journey through the northern provinces of Japan in the 17th century, is recounted in his travelogue "The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” ("Oku no Hosomichi”). In the summer of 1689, Bashō set out on his journey with his traveling companion Sora. They traveled on foot, carrying only minimal provisions and staying in humble lodgings along the way. Bashō was seeking inspiration for his poetry, and he found it in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the places he visited.

Like Bashō before him, Ogawa set out on a journey through the Tōhoku region, unlike Bashō, who traveled on foot with pen in hand, Ogawa preferred to move by train with camera in hand.  His photographs capture the rugged beauty of the landscape, from snow-covered mountains to misty forests and along deserted roads with glimpses of wild oceans, often shot through foggy windows on a train in motion. Through his lens, Ogawa reveals a world that is both remote and timeless, a world in stillness and motion.

Despite the passage of centuries, the challenges faced by Bashō on his journey are still evident in Ogawa’s photographs. The loneliness and isolation of the road are palpable in the shots of empty trains, lone tracks or roads and desolate hotel interiors. So are the physical challenges of traversing rough terrain and inclement weather documented in his muted photographs.  There is a marked contrast between the beauty and tranquility of the landscape and the harsh realities of life in this remote region. From plain coastal towns to empty streets, Ogawa’s images reveal the toll that economic decline and depopulation have taken on the area. Yet there remains a sense of hope and resilience.

Richard Rothman's Town of C is a photographic meditation on what lies beneath the unsettling surface of American culture, as seen through the lens of a small town along the Front Range of Southern Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Rooted in the tradition of the socially critical photography books that have taken America as their subject  — Walker Evans’ “American Photographs,” Robert Frank’s “The Americans,” and Robert Adams’ “What We Bought,” among them — “Town of C” both encompasses and expands on the American theme, provoking thoughts about the larger environment. It begins with a prologue of alternating titles and images that announce the elemental forces of nature: water, and the source of the river that runs through the town; the region’s tectonics and the mountains that have risen above them to shape and frame the landscape; and light, the source of energy that fuels life itself.

“In the summer of 1987, I was 26 years old, a couple years out of graduate school, and living in a derelict apartment outside of Boston. I had received an artist’s residency in the South of France, and so, in August, I flew to Paris. I stayed a few weeks with close family friends in a top floor apartment on the Avenue de Wagram. My friends were working in fashion and film, and I was told my bed had once belonged to Jane Fonda before she became Barbarella. The weather was getting colder, and they gave me a brown corduroy jacket to wear that Jean Seberg (Godard’s Breathless, Preminger’s Bonjour Tristesse) had cried on. I would eat some breakfast and run around Paris photographing all day—hardly eating because I had no money—returning to their apartment for dinner and a glass of champagne. 

Later in the year, I went to the South to begin my artist’s residency at the Camargo Foundation, in Cassis, a town on the sea not far from Marseille. The writer Virginia Woolf, the pointillist Paul Signac, the fauvists André Derain and Raoul Dufy, and the Provençal poet Frédéric Mistral, had spent extended periods of time in Cassis. I took day trips from Cassis to Arles, Aix, Marseille, and Nice, and could process my film in the simple darkroom that was supplied to me.

In 1987, there were no cell phones or digital cameras. To meet up with someone you had to set a time and a place and each of you had to stick to the plan. The seasons seemed to linger around more, and in general, everyone seemed to have more time. The parks, museums, and subways were less crowded. The rhythm of daily life was more relaxed. People were worried in 1987, but not as worried as we are now.” – From the Introduction by Mark Steinmetz

The photographs in Starlings were made on one afternoon in December 2023 at Ham Wall, a wetland wildlife sanctuary managed by the RSPB in Somerset. The images show the stillness of late afternoon as the starlings fly in to roost. As the book progresses, thousands of birds are shown in full flight before disappearing with the coming of darkness.

It is thought that up to a million starlings roost at the Avalon Marshes at Ham Wall. Some of the birds inhabit the marshes year-round, and others migrate from colder countries in continental Europe as northern winter descends and contribute to this staggering number of birds. During the day they travel up to 20 miles to feed and return in the afternoon, an hour or so before sunset. Southam’s photographs capture the spectacle of the starling flocks populating the sky before flying down to roost for the night, leaving the skies empty once more.

Published by roshin books in 2017, Untitled was a culmination of Shin Yanagisawa’s travel photography. Now, Tracks of the City returns to print, his first and most iconic photobook, originally published in 1979 by Asahi Sonorama. It captures Tokyo in the 1960s, at the height of the country’s rapid economic growth.

The photographs in this book were taken between 1965 and 1970, during a time when Tokyo was engulfed in a wave of “scrap and build” redevelopment. As old neighborhoods disappeared and new structures rose in their place, Yanagisawa turned his lens toward this transitional moment. Through precise and composed framing, he revealed the evolving forms and atmosphere of the city, without relying on narrative or symbolism.

“Photographs don’t need words”, Yanagisawa remained unwavering in this belief throughout his career. His work was neither part of the Provoke movement nor the so-called Konpora trend. What emerges here is not a category, but a singular vision—one that could only belong to Shin Yanagisawa.

In the distance, there's the ocean. But here, it's the land of high, rounded mountains, of rivers, of pastures. Of those who cross, share and tend it. This land is the Basque hinterland. Anne Rearick nevertheless crossed this misty barrier by setting foot for the first time, in 1990, in the small village of Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port). Since then, and for more than 30 years, Rearick has returned again and again, establishing a deep bond with the inhabitants over generations. And therein lies the strength of Rearick's work: a deep, sincere feeling for the people she photographs. It's not naive romanticism, but an open, tender and generous gaze, characteristic of her long-term work and her humanist vision of photography. Her honest understanding of the photographer's work is evident in her square compositions, where concentration of vision and subtle black and white tones harmonize to convey not only the beauty of the Basque country, but also the reality of its raw land and of its rural world we see evolving over the decades.

Gure Bazterrak, which if it were easy to translate the nuances of Basque language, could be transcribed as « our land », is the representation of the visceral attachment of the inhabitants to this land, and is Rearick's love song to those she has loved and still loves there.

Momo Okabe's first domestic photo book is now published six years since Dildo (2013) and Bible (2014), both published by Session Press in New York. With no advertising or publicity, her works have become highly acclaimed and have won various national and international awards.

After that, Momo Okabe kept her distance from the contemporary photographic scene and continued to take photographs in her own way, and her pregnancy and birth became an opportunity to announce this work. This book contains photographs taken in Japan between 2014 and 2019. This great experiment includes friends, regular landscapes, and her pregnancy and birth as an asexual. Red, blue, yellow, purple ... these photographs of various colors are her very personal record, and at the same time they appear to us as a special story revealing emotions.

“Dawn in Spring” brings back the earliest works of Japanese photographer Asako Narahashi.　Originally shot in 1989, a decisive period not only for the then-unknown artist, Narahashi exhibited the images from her “Dawn in Spring” series four separate times throughout the year. Including previously unshown images, this book represents the first time her series is made available in print.

After taking part in Daido Moriyama’s “FotoSession” workshop in the mid-80s, 1989 was the year her time as a university student would end. With an undecided future ahead of her, Narahashi travelled through Japan – Kumamoto, Miyakejima, Hakata, Yokohama, Hachinohe, Yuzawa, Tokyo… – and inadvertently laid the foundation for her photographic career. Despite the long time between these photographs and her breakthrough in the latter half of the 90s, the black-and-white images in “Dawn of Spring” already reveal the acute sensibilities of this exceptional artist.

Perhaps because it happened to be spring; maybe the words were already resting at the tip of my tongue and just felt right to me. I had no real idea where to travel or what to photograph. These three volumes encompass the complete evolution of the work of the renowned Italian photographer, Guido Guidi. Made in Sardinia on two trips separated by forty years, the two books not only mark the stylistic development in the work of Guidi but also the historical shifts and changes on the remote island.

The first trip was on Guidi’s honeymoon in 1974, and with a Nikon F and a FIAT 127 he made a series of black and white photographs which reflect the social and political climate of Sardinia in the post-sixties era. The second visit, in 2011, involved 3 cameras – a Hasselblad, a Deardorff 8x10 and a digital Canon – and the now well-known Guidi palette of tender, almost resigned colour.

Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain (1931–2012) published very few books during his lifetime, but perhaps the most fêted among them was Valparaíso. He photographed this Chilean seaport throughout his career, but it was in the early 1960s, when he returned to his homeland after travelling the world for many years as a Magnum photographer, that it became a focus for his attention. He saw it as ‘a rather sordid yet romantic city’, standing between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, falling into a slow decline as its trading importance faded away, yet still retaining hints of beauty and magic. Now published in English for the first time with an introduction by Agnès Sire as well as a specially written text by Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, this new edition of Valparaíso is based on a layout that Larrain designed in 1993, in response to the original French edition of 1991. It also includes a selection of previously unpublished photographs taken between 1952 and 1992, expanding the original 36 images to a total of 120. This intimate book features handwritten notes and texts by the artist himself, allowing us to share his singular vision of the world and its moments of grace.

A pillar knocked into the ground next to a stream in a flat, open landscape, trees and houses visible in the distance, beneath a vast sky. That is the backdrop to all of Stephen Gill´s photographs in this book. We see the same landscape in spring and summer, in autumn and winter, we see it in sunshine and rain, in snow and wind. Yet there is not the slightest monotony about these pictures, for in almost every one there is a bird, and each of these birds opens up a unique moment in time. We see something that has never happened before and will never happen again. That it takes place in the midst of a landscape characterised by repetition, in which time is cyclical, sets up a keen existential dynamic: on the one hand, everything has happened before, there’s nothing new under the sun; on the other, every moment is unique and carries the hallmark of the miracle: what happens happens only once and never again.

But this wasn’t what I thought about the first time I looked at these photographs. In fact, I barely thought at all, for I was shaken, as a person so often is when confronted with an extraordinary work of art. I’d never seen birds in this way before, as if on their own terms, as independent creatures with independent lives. Ancient, forever improvising, endlessly embroiled with the forces of nature, and yet indulging too. And so infinitely alien to us.

Yasuhiro Ogawa’s new photobook Into the Silence captures the rugged yet timeless beauty of Japan’s northern region as he follows in the footsteps of the 17th Century poet Matsuo Bashō.

The story of Matsuo Bashō's journey through the northern provinces of Japan in the 17th century, is recounted in his travelogue "The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” ("Oku no Hosomichi”). In the summer of 1689, Bashō set out on his journey with his traveling companion Sora. They traveled on foot, carrying only minimal provisions and staying in humble lodgings along the way. Bashō was seeking inspiration for his poetry, and he found it in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the places he visited.

Like Bashō before him, Ogawa set out on a journey through the Tōhoku region, unlike Bashō, who traveled on foot with pen in hand, Ogawa preferred to move by train with camera in hand.  His photographs capture the rugged beauty of the landscape, from snow-covered mountains to misty forests and along deserted roads with glimpses of wild oceans, often shot through foggy windows on a train in motion. Through his lens, Ogawa reveals a world that is both remote and timeless, a world in stillness and motion.

Despite the passage of centuries, the challenges faced by Bashō on his journey are still evident in Ogawa’s photographs. The loneliness and isolation of the road are palpable in the shots of empty trains, lone tracks or roads and desolate hotel interiors. So are the physical challenges of traversing rough terrain and inclement weather documented in his muted photographs.  There is a marked contrast between the beauty and tranquility of the landscape and the harsh realities of life in this remote region. From plain coastal towns to empty streets, Ogawa’s images reveal the toll that economic decline and depopulation have taken on the area. Yet there remains a sense of hope and resilience.

“Light and Shadow,” Daido Moriyama’s classic from 1982, finally available again in a new edition by Bookshop M & Getsuyousha.

The photobook marked Moriyama’s return to photography, ten years after his previous photobook publication and three years after he basically stopped photographing altogether. “Light and Shadow” also marks an evolution in Moriyama’s photography, with the moodiness of earlier works replaced by a clearer focus on objects and the early bure-boke having evolved into a richer, high-contrast style.

The English version features a hardcover reprint of Moriyama’s 1982 photobook as well as a booklet with detailed information to each photograph, exclusive commentary by Daido Moriyama, and an interview originally published in the September 1981 issue of the magazine “Shashin Jidai” (all in English translation).

In the 1980s, the acclaimed Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller spent months at a time away from home, collaborating with renowned directors such as Alex Cox and Wim Wenders to create some of the decade’s most influential films such as Repo Man, Paris, Texas, Barfly and To Live and Die in L.A..

After long days on set, Müller stayed at the Kensington Motel in Santa Monica, a simple apartment hotel just behind Ocean Boulevard and steps from the beach. He liked its plain comforts: an ironing board folded into the wall, a coffee pot bubbling on the stove, Garfield the hotel cat who kept him company. It felt familiar, not just a place to pass through. 

He always carried his SX-70 Polaroid camera, making tender images when work paused, bringing what William Friedkin called “a foreigner’s eye” to America: noticing details others missed, avoiding clichés, always returning to light and colour as his true subjects. In these Polaroids, Müller frames a Los Angeles that no longer exists: small rooms, edges of the beach, street corners, a city built for cars seen by a cinematographer who preferred to walk. They reveal a man far from home, looking for stillness and light in the spaces in between.

Edited and with an introduction by Andrea Müller-Schirmer; designed by Linda van Deursen and expertly printed in Italy and bound as a uniquely flexible chopped linen soft-back, silk screened in a sun-kissed orange, it carries the warmth of Müller’s Los Angeles. Alongside Müller’s images are texts from his collaborators, including directors Alex Cox and Wim Wenders, and actor Willem Dafoe.

My daughter took me for a ride in her car the other day, and drove me to Yokohama. I hadn’t been there for quite a long time, so I was happy to roam the streets of Yokohama with my camera in my hand, always ready to shoot. We parked the car near Kannai Station, and after walking for a while, we arrived at Isezakicho. When I looked up, I noticed (the female singer) Mina Aoe smiling down at me from a giant billboard, and being happily reminded once again that I was in Yokohama, I took quite a few snapshots. That was when I caught sight of a group of cheerful girls parading on the other side of the street, which instantly had me clicking away to all sides. The streets were getting crowded, and seeing the skyscrapers of “Minatomirai” behind the buildings along the avenues, I couldn’t help but feel strongly impressed at how much Yokohama had changed.

Before – in fact quite a long time ago – I often made trips to Tokyo together with the photographer Takuma Nakahira, who was also living in Zushi back then. We would take a train on the Yokosuka Line, and then change to the Toyoko Line at Yokohama. But once we were at Yokohama, instead of jumping on the next train, it happened ever so often that we walked out of the station on a whim, down to the Sakuragicho area, and into a coffee shop where we would end up drinking coffee for hours. Even when I suggested walking around a bit more and taking photos in the neighborhood, Nakahira was only interested in the scenery around the port of Kawasaki at night, so over his coffee he just kept talking happily about things and people. like Godard, or the songs of Mina Mazzini, my favorite singer at the time.

When I think about it now, my only memories related to Yokohama are those of Nakahira shooting like crazy when the two of us eventually went to the port of Kawasaki at night, and then again at the time of his exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art.
The present cityscape of Yokohama has piqued my curiosity.

I guess I will continue going there every now and then, and take a bunch of photos."

When politicians and pundits talk about the heartland, or the heart of the country, they’re generally not pandering to places like Roger Richardson’s Middletown, which is located in Orange County, in New York’s Hudson Valley. The late Philip Levine, arguably the greatest working-class poet of the late 20th century, once said that his goal was to write poems so transparent that “no words are noticed. You look through them into a vision of the people, the place.” Time and again, Richardson realizes Levine’s vision through his photographs, and it’s a vision that will be achingly familiar to anyone who grew up in or has spent time in strikingly similar working-class cities and towns all over the United States.

'Let’s assume there is some brainwave that suddenly prompts me to think about the present state of photography in Japan.

Fact of the matter is, I’m quite simply not really interested in such things in the first place, because no matter what I came up with as an answer, you would reply that photography and photographers in Japan, and just about everywhere else in the world, have long been living in their own respective bubble, seriously dedicated to their own thing in their own reality. That would make perfect sense to me, and as a result, I would once again get caught up in a state of mind unable to pursue – let alone answer – the question what exactly photography means to me now.

A photograph is something that fragmentarily reflects the sensibility and sensitivity of a photographer in the very moment he or she releases the shutter, and the things in it instantly become the photographer’s own. But once it is reproduced and printed or exhibited, it disperses into the multifariously shaded folds of the audience’s gaze, where it establishes itself as a unique and hard new reality, and as a manifestation of some kind of memory, which again works as a mighty, enigmatic tool that connects past, present and future.

It is nothing more and nothing less than a camera, and we photographers can only take our hats off to Monsieur Nicéphore Niépce and thank him for inventing it.
These are the things that I have on my mind as I look back on another day of wandering around and taking snapshots in the streets; another day of asking myself what photography is all about, and being reminded that it’s just the great thing that it is.'

In Geography of Abandonment, Raymond Meeks explores the elastic nature and meaning of home and place. Place to become, dwell within, leave and return to. “Place” imbued with memory, present reality, as well as the unknowns posed by the future. Meeks reveals his fascination with the ritualistic processes that inform notions of transcendence and grief. Our departures from home as a necessary abandoning while finding our way in the world, being returned to the emptiness of pure existence.

Meeks’ work is informed by a constant recalibration between inner and outer world, the canny and the uncanny, the particular and the universal. In his hands, the camera is an instrument that dissects ritual and renders form, briefly making the world around us comprehensible, and rendering us comprehensible to ourselves. His personal and professional relationship with the photographer Adrianna Ault has been a primary source of inspiration and collaboration for Meeks over the years. Both artists struggle with the notion of personal meaning, especially as the years pass, children leave, and their own relationship with each other shifts and evolves. Meeks watches his partner, and poetically observes:

She seems to be expecting something, some form she could take possession of.

A borrowed form, perhaps, one that could express the real pain inside.
An absolute breaking and repurposing of truth.
A place where truth could be gotten at, but also where truth could be defended.

A burning experience of molding herself.
A sudden glimpse of her own being.

His photographs of Ault, and the photographs they have made together, convey a restlessness astir within the quotidian, a condition manifest in his work, and the experimental nature of his photographic approach and processes.

After an unfortunate event on the streets of Boston in 1976, resulting in a head injury to an angry man while working with a 35mm camera, the American artist Mike Smith traded in his his Leica for a Linhof Press 23 camera, and moved away from spontaneous street photography to a more intimate portraits.

He would go on to produce a detailed record of the inhabitants of Boston’s streets in an inclusive, non-judgmental, and yet direct approach. Smith worked with a large camera with an even larger flat unit, a formidable machine that got peoples attention and held it long enough for him to complete the related tasks to operate it successfully. “The driving force, above of all, was my whole-hearted embrace of the photography as a way of life. As a Vietnam veteran (where I first discovered the medium) at the age of twenty, for the first time, I believed I had a future to pursue.”

Situated on the Thames Estuary in southeast England, the North Kent Marshes are an overlooked but vital swathe of land. For centuries, trade has flowed in through the estuary and the surrounding wilderness harbours a rich history. In the 18th century, plague outbreaks ravaged Europe and ships were quarantined in the nearby Medway. The low-lying terrain provided the ideal conditions for smugglers, as small vessels would target ships transporting goods to the capital, allegedly sneaking the contraband down underground tunnel networks once ashore. It was against this illicit backdrop that Charles Dickens set the early parts of Great Expectations (1861), where the escaped convict Magwitch takes refuge in the marshes. 

Since 2011, Martin Amis has been photographing in the same marshland near his home, finding solace in the landscape through walking. This Land is the result of many walks over the past decade – much in the period from March 2020, coinciding with the UK’s first coronavirus lockdown. Devoid of people, Amis’ images invite a reconnection with nature: derelict industry reclaimed by the wild, grazing sheep and lone birds drifting across a monotone sky. Despite an undertone of loss and absence, Amis portrays a land that is continually being shaped by the elements and the civilisations that pass through it. If we listen closely, we might almost hear the shouts of the night watch over the gulf of time and the creaking prison hulks that once inspired Dickens.
