Catherine DeLattre’s photographic work is characterized by quiet observation, stillness, and what can be described as “empathetic neutrality.” Alongside her career as a film still photographer, she has developed a practice focused on vernacular subjects: barns, vehicles, homes, and roadside elements in rural landscapes. Her images present these scenes without intervention, inviting viewers to find emotional meaning through attentive looking and an awareness of time passing.

Originally from Pennsylvania, DeLattre discovered photography while studying archaeology at Kent State University, where a required course led her to pursue the medium more seriously. She later studied at Purdue University, where she shifted from black-and-white to color photography under the influence of figures such as William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. After teaching in Maine and New York, she moved to New York City in 1979, working at the International Center of Photography and photographing everyday urban life with a similarly observational approach.

Today, dividing her time between New York City and rural Pennsylvania, DeLattre documents landscapes shaped by human presence. Though her work shares the visual restraint of New Topographics, it departs from its detachment, offering instead a humanist, empathetic engagement with place and a subtle reflection on belonging.

“From 2021 to 2023, I photographed around two reservoirs in the Central Valley of California experiencing a twenty-three year megadrought. The Reservoir weaves together images of the drying lakes and people seeking a leisurely day at the beach. They bring their dogs, babies and baby carriages, inner tubes, kayaks, rafts, umbrellas, coolers, and tents. As the summer progresses and the waterline recedes, families walk over a mile to reach the beach. At times, the sky is colored with smoke from nearby forest fires. The photographs in The Reservoir are part of an ongoing exploration in my work of how droughts, climate change, and ever-present anxiety collectively maps onto life in the American West.” — Mimi Plumb

Ethridge’s cult early studies of the American everyday return in a three-volume set revealing the origins of his style.

Loose Joints is proud to present In the Beginning, a three-volume set reuniting Roe Ethridge’s three formative, self-published books – County Line, Orange Grove and Spare Bedroom – originally released in 2004–05 and long out of print. Across these early volumes, Ethridge stages a sharp, playful inquiry into the American everyday. From rotting Florida citrus orchards to half-built suburban interiors and the static hum of strip-mall signage, each book turns on a clear typological register, where the familiar slides easily into the strange. Ethridge sets his pictures in a dialogue with photographic archetypes – catalogues, calendars, studio models, kitsch displays – using them to probe how images shape, naturalise and sometimes fracture American life.

Ethridge’s early books all emerge from loose typologies that, in their slippages, probe and complicate the aesthetics of American visual culture. From 2004, Orange Grove distills photographs made in a dilapidated Florida orchard into a study of slow collapse, a familiar symbol of American plenty quietly withering on the tree. Self-published simultaneously, 2004’s Spare Bedroom begins Ethridge’s career-long practice of jumbling and juxtaposing the commercial and the personal, in which an early commission for a furniture company unravels into a jagged mix of domestic scenes, catalogue imagery and loosely staged interiors. Finally, County Line (2005) turns to the liminal spaces of Queens and Nassau County, abstracting the language of the strip mall into a concrete-poetry of word-photographs that sit against other images evoking the blurry edges of the suburban sprawl.

Taken together, the three books form a weave of contrasts, where moments of banality tilt towards the uncanny and the absurd. These early publishing experiments trace the emergence of Ethridge’s now-signature method: slanting, doubling and displacing images until they cohere with unexpected force or deliberately fall apart.

Reissued twenty years later, In the Beginning reads as a prefiguration of the more than fifteen books and catalogues that would follow. It marks the opening chapter of an artist who would go on to become one of contemporary photography’s most influential practitioners – revealing the restless, incisive eye that shaped everything to come.

Holy Cow! is a romp through 20 years of family photographs by Melonie Bennett. The black and white images in this unconventional family album were made between 1990-2011. They depict the rituals, traditions, dramas, laughter, gatherings, the dogs and the drunken exploits alongside quieter moments of reprieve—they show the rollercoaster of human life. 

‘In high school, I was shy and naive. When my father spread manure in fields that bordered classmates’ homes, I wanted to be invisible. Being the oldest, I thought I had to behave. I never dared to party or skip school. It wasn’t even an option. My siblings sure made up for it—they were wild. But I found my groove. I took a high school darkroom class, at the same time that I took on the role as the designated driver for family and friends to parties. This gave me the license to observe and take pictures of what other people, including my family were doing. And I didn’t have to drink! What a gift from God.’

Bennett and her siblings grew up on a dairy farm and although the family lived under constant stress, they coped by laughing, eating, fighting then talking and pretending everything was okay. She has always been drawn to photograph the absurd and unexpected—a dog wearing cowboy boots, boys playing cards in bras, going home at 2am after a moose hunt, college kids streaking through the farmland and the juxtaposition of pregnant and beer bellies. Humour and irony were highly prized in the Bennett household, giving relief from a daunting heaviness. Intertwined with the photographs are recollections and stories by the photographer’s brother, Merritt.

‘As photographing my family became more routine, Merritt thought it would be clever to start gifting me a single, unwrapped roll of film on these occasions. He would just laugh and say ‘that’s all you’re getting’—mocking me, my picture-taking and loving the ribbing he was doling out. But in fact, each time he had spent six bucks on me and had to make the effort to shop—this proved he loved me, right? I told him he should save his money and write down his stories as my gifts instead.'

American photographer David Armstrong (1954–2014), best known for his intimate black-and-white portraiture, is recognised as a member of the ‘Boston School’ of photography, a group of artists who studied in the city from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.

This publication marks the first posthumous exhibition catalogue of Armstrong’s work. Organised and edited by the David Armstrong Archive, the catalogue is published to coincide with exhibitions at Kunsthalle Zurich in 2024 and LUMA Arles in 2025. The book focuses exclusively on his never-before-published contact prints, featuring 286 images reproduced at a 1:1 scale. The prints, from between 1974 and 1994, showcase many of his iconic portraits of friends in Provincetown, Boston, and downtown Manhattan, including those of Nan Goldin, Cookie Mueller, Mark Morrisroe, Rene Ricard, Gary Indiana, Jack Pierson, Tabboo! In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth turns his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. But as with his photographs of the Mississippi, Soth’s pictures of Niagara are less about natural wonder than human desire. “I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers,” says Soth, “the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion.” While the subject may be hot, these are quiet pictures. Using a large-format 8x10 camera, the photographs are rigorously composed and richly detailed. Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls, the editing is tight and surprising. Soth depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots and pawn shop wedding rings. Throughout the book, Soth also includes a number of love letters from the subjects he photographed. We read about teenage crushes, workplace affairs, heartbreak and suicide. Oscar Wilde wrote of the Falls, “The sight of the stupendous waterfall must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest, disappointments in American married life.” In Soth’s Niagara, we see both the passion and the disappointment. His pictures are a remarkable portrayal of modern love and it’s aftermath.

Rochester, New York was home to Eastman Kodak for 125 years until its bankruptcy in 2012. Alex Webb took photographs of the city with his last rolls of Kodachrome, a no-longer-available, vibrant colour film that can now only be processed as black-and-white ...

The resulting photographs, taken during what may be the last days of film as we know it, are a meditation on film, memory, time and the city itself; they have a weathered quality akin to a fading memory. Alex also took some shots in digital colour, which punctuate the black-and-white work with images in his signature style.

Rebecca Norris Webb, who still uses film for all her work, responded to the medium's uncertain future by creating a melancholy refrain of colour still-lifes and portraits of Rochester women past and present.

The most consequential moments are rarely dramatic. What stays with us, what makes us feel truly seen, is often small, domestic, and endlessly repeated. Judith Black’s photographs, made at home in the early 1980s of her four young children and their stepfather, remind us of this simple truth.

In 1980, after a divorce, Judith moved her family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and took a job at the darkroom at MIT. Their home wasn’t grand, but it was theirs, a place to begin again. Not long after settling in, they found a worn old armchair left on the side of the road and gave it a place by the window. It became a spot of rest and quiet theatre, a vantage point from which Judith watched her children grow, day by day, frame by frame.

This new book gathers every photograph she made of that single chair. What begins as cast-off furniture becomes, through her attentive eye, a kind of threshold: a simple thing that holds a whole world. These themes are found in the essay by author Brad Zellar, at the heart of the book, which he explores through these fragments of experiences and stories interspersed with literary quotations.

Both an ode to the printed image and to the memory of those who have lived, this limited edition echoes traditional photo albums with its screw-bound canvas cover. The dialogue between the materiality of the images and the different types of paper, including one that is translucent, creates a cinematic fiction within the book, with certain photographs appearing and disappearing like enigmatic collages. These images, arranged randomly on the page, respond to one another and allow the reader to create their own narratives.

In the 1980s, the acclaimed Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller spent months at a time away from home, collaborating with renowned directors such as Alex Cox and Wim Wenders to create some of the decade’s most influential films such as Repo Man, Paris, Texas, Barfly and To Live and Die in L.A..

After long days on set, Müller stayed at the Kensington Motel in Santa Monica, a simple apartment hotel just behind Ocean Boulevard and steps from the beach. He liked its plain comforts: an ironing board folded into the wall, a coffee pot bubbling on the stove, Garfield the hotel cat who kept him company. It felt familiar, not just a place to pass through. 

He always carried his SX-70 Polaroid camera, making tender images when work paused, bringing what William Friedkin called “a foreigner’s eye” to America: noticing details others missed, avoiding clichés, always returning to light and colour as his true subjects. In these Polaroids, Müller frames a Los Angeles that no longer exists: small rooms, edges of the beach, street corners, a city built for cars seen by a cinematographer who preferred to walk. They reveal a man far from home, looking for stillness and light in the spaces in between.

Edited and with an introduction by Andrea Müller-Schirmer; designed by Linda van Deursen and expertly printed in Italy and bound as a uniquely flexible chopped linen soft-back, silk screened in a sun-kissed orange, it carries the warmth of Müller’s Los Angeles. Alongside Müller’s images are texts from his collaborators, including directors Alex Cox and Wim Wenders, and actor Willem Dafoe.

Los Angeles is a centrifugal city, fundamentally American in its tendency toward the periphery. Isolated Houses focuses on the urban sprawl’s outer frontier. Here, 150 miles outside the city, the built environment comprises a handful of rudimentary structures, isolated cubes at the edge of the infinite plane of the desert. The dwellings that dot the landscape seem temporary and toy-like, but are the center of these photographs, the reason for their being. This work pays homage to those places where nature and culture intersect, and suggests that we all occupy a border zone between the natural and the artificial.

“From 1995 to 1998, I worked on a series of photographs of isolated houses in the desert at the east-end of the Morongo Valley in Southern California. As I meandered through the desert, a dog would occasionally chase my car. Sometime in 1996 I began to bring along a 35mm camera equipped with a motor drive and loaded with a fast and grainy black-and-white film. The process was simple; when I saw a dog coming toward the car I would pre-focus the camera and set the exposure. With one hand on the steering wheel, I would hold the camera out the window and expose anywhere from a few frames to a complete roll of film. I'll admit that I was not above turning around and taking a second pass in front of a house with an enthusiastic dog. Contemplating a dog chasing a car invites any number of metaphors and juxtapositions: culture and nature, the domestic and the wild, love and hate, joy and fear, the heroic and the idiotic. It could be viewed as a visceral and kinetic dance. Here we have two vectors and velocities, that of a dog and that of a car and, seeing that a camera will never capture reality and that a dog will never catch a car, evidence of devotion to a hopeless enterprise.” – John Divola

The Sierra revisits the Sierra Nevada mountains through the context of today’s climate crisis, a landscape that has long shaped American ideas of wilderness. Combining large-format film with digital post-production, Aaron Rothman (US) created this body of around fifty colour images over six years. The work seeks to evoke the physical experience of being in the mountains while registering the environmental changes reshaping the region, and places itself in dialogue with the long history of landscape representation.

The Sierra Nevada holds personal significance for Rothman, inspiring a lifelong connection to nature and leading him to take up photography as a teenager. However, his recent visits have been marked by a growing sense of dread and loss as signs of climate change, such as forest fires and haze, become increasingly visible. This evolving relationship informs the project’s core aim: to capture the contradictions of being in a changing landscape, where personal attachment meets environmental uncertainty.

Rothman works in an iterative process split between fieldwork and digital editing. In the field, he makes large-format photographs in response to meaningful natural encounters, such as the immeasurable sense of space evinced by a distant mountain peak, the sheltering confines of a copse of trees at dusk, or the devastation of a recently charred section of forest. In the studio, he determines their final form. Some images remain as they were, others are transformed by inverting colours, layering multiple views of a single place, or washing out an image to the edge of visibility. These interventions aim to unsettle the viewer, creating imagery that feels both familiar and strange.

The European landscape tradition – from Jacob van Ruisdael and Théodore Rousseau to Albert Bierstadt – serves as a reference point, prompting reflection on how traditional representations have shaped our perception of wilderness, and how idealising it as pristine may have contributed to its present vulnerability.

Ultimately, The Sierra challenges the icon it depicts: a landscape both majestic and fragile. It invites us to reimagine environmental realities and our relation to nature – not as something separate or untouched, but as an evolving space intertwined with human impact. And to confront that duality through images that are at once beautiful and unsettling.

He pioneered the use of dye-transfer printing for art photography in the 1970s. In 1959, Arthur Tress began taking his camera with him on walks through the Ramble, an overgrown corner of Central Park that had become New York’s best-known outdoor meeting place for queer men. Designed as a picturesque woodland in the nineteenth century, by the late 1960s it had grown wild, a hidden, half-forgotten place of chance encounters in the middle of the city.

For a little over a year, Tress returned again and again, recording the everyday choreography of cruising and creating what is now recognised as the earliest known photographic record of outdoor cruising in a natural setting.

His images show the flow of men through the Ramble, some caught from a distance, others posed or gently staged in small scenes. He saw these photographs not just as documentation but as a kind of queer still life, part allegory, part dream.

Long unseen, The Ramble is now considered a vital piece of New York’s queer history, part ethnography, part fantasy. More than fifty years later, it stands alongside a new generation of queer landscape projects that share its quiet focus on how bodies, longing, and hidden places shape each other.

Although best known for his large-format color photographs made with vintage Kodak Brownie cameras, William Christenberry has also consistently produced work with 35 mm Kodachrome slide film ever since he took up photography. William Christenberry: Kodachromes is the first publication to showcase this stunning and previously unknown body of work, spanning from 1964 to 2007, of which only a small number of images have ever been published or exhibited.
